First Nations Update - April

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding these times, we want to assure you that we are moving forward with our Indigenous projects.
Recently our First Nations Tourism Plan Working Group was established to guide the implementation of the action plan. This group has now met 3 times over Microsoft Teams and is making good progress with each meeting. One outcome from the meetings was to develop a survey that would help inform State and Federal governments on how best to help further support Indigenous tourism during this time and throughout the recovery. The survey was distributed to our Indigenous networks and received good responses.  Thank you to all that participated.

As a legacy of the Year of Indigenous Tourism QTIC has been and will continue to offer free entry-level membership to First Nations operators throughout Qld. Since we introduced this complimentary offer we are pleased to have welcomed 20 new First Nations businesses on board to the QTIC fold. We take this opportunity to welcome you all, and we certainly look forward to working with you now and into the future. If any other Indigenous tourism businesses in Queensland would like to become QTIC members please contact Rhonda Appo:

Unfortunately due to the current circumstances, the National NAIDOC Week has been postponed to a later date in the interest of protecting the health of community members. This means the QTIC Annual NAIDOC Corporate Breakfast has also been put on hold. While the date of NAIDOC is yet to be determined, we can confirm that QTIC will celebrate NAIDOC this year, and we are looking into alternate ways to host our celebrations.

First Nations Good News Story
One of our First Nations members, Juan Walker of Walkabout Cultural Adventures, was featured on the Channel 9 television show ‘My Way’ this month. The episode takes viewers on an insightful and educational journey as Juan shares the culture of his people and country, Kuku Yalanji, in Tropical North Queensland. The episode of My Way aired across Queensland on Sunday 5 April and across the nation on Saturday 11 April. You can view a snippet of the episode here. The full episode is available online and through the 9Now app.
