QTIC celebrates 18th birthday milestone

Birthday fever was in the air this morning as the state’s peak body for tourism – the Queensland Tourism Industry Council – celebrated its 18th birthday (and first networking event for 2019).

QTIC members, Ministers, current and former staff and board members, invited guest and tourism industry operators gathered to reflect on what QTIC has achieved in its 18 years, but to also look toward what the future and the next 12 months hold.

QTIC Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said tourism ultimately thrives on partnerships.

“At QTIC we do look back with a little bit of pride on the contribution we have been able to make over the last two decades to build on such partnerships,” he said.

“By engaging with all committed tourism stakeholders, governments and other partners, by listening and finding shared solutions we are - together - creating a better future for all of Queensland.”

Mr Gschwind also commented it was wonderful to see such an impressively diverse group of people come together to celebrate QTIC’s birthday.

“That is a reflection of the many facets of tourism that brings people and business together,” he said.

“There were accommodation providers, transport and tour operators, universities, media, consultants, supporting businesses, artists, politicians, multiple government agencies, scientists, destination marketing bodies, local governments and some outstanding individuals who have been with us for our entire journey.

“To us that is a strong sign of the spirit of collaboration in the tourism industry.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said in her keynote speech that Queensland’s tourism industry had never looked stronger.

“Queensland tourism is growing significantly and that is happening because we are working in a way that is collaborative and in a ‘Team Queensland’ approach,” she said.

“The way to remain competitive is not to see each other as competitors but as collaborators working towards the same goal for our industry.”

A lively panel session discussed some of the challenges and opportunities for tourism.

Panellists were The Star Entertainment Group’s CEO Matt Bekier, QTIC Board member and QYAC CEO Cameron Costello, and Spicers Retreat Marketing Director Kira Klein. Shannon Ruska delivered the Welcome to Country with his usual enthusiasm.
