From curiosity to careers: How Gateway is connecting tourism operators with future talent

What happens when tourism operators open their doors to the next generation of talent? For Paradise Resort Gold Coast, involvement in QTIC’s Gateway to Industry Schools Program has helped students discover rewarding career pathways while creating valuable workforce opportunities for the business. We spoke with the students, school and industry partners behind the program to learn more.

For many tourism and hospitality operators, workforce challenges remain front of mind. But across Queensland, businesses involved in QTIC’s Gateway to Industry Schools Program (GISP) are helping shape the next generation of industry professionals while discovering future employees in the process.

With 82 Gateway Schools participating statewide, GISP connects students with real-world tourism and hospitality experiences, helping them explore career pathways while still at school. For Paradise Resort Gold Coast, involvement in the program has delivered benefits for both students and the business.

“We were motivated to get involved as a way to connect with students who have an interest in tourism and hospitality career pathways,” said Paradise Resort HR Manager Danielle Collett. “At Paradise Resort, we are passionate about training and development, and GISP provided a valuable platform to showcase what a career in hospitality can look like.”

That investment is already paying off.

Year 12 student Madacyn is completing a cookery apprenticeship through the program. While she never expected to pursue a career in the kitchen, encouragement from her teacher led her to discover a passion she didn’t know she had.

“I never expected to get into cooking, but I’m really enjoying it,” she said. “My teacher encouraged me to try cookery and showed me the different pathways available.”

Since joining Paradise Resort, Madacyn has developed practical kitchen skills while learning to thrive in a fast-paced environment. One standout moment came when a colourful bruschetta she prepared was recognised by the Executive Sous Chef.

“It felt rewarding to have my work acknowledged,” she said.

Fellow Year 12 student Ayva is completing a hospitality traineeship and credits the experience with building both her confidence and customer service skills.

“It’s been really good for getting a feel for what working life is actually like after school,” she said. “I’ve liked building my confidence and getting better at talking to all different kinds of people.”

One of her proudest moments came when she served her own family during their stay at the resort.

“It was a bit surreal but really rewarding,” she said. “It made me realise how much of an impact good service can have on someone’s overall experience.”

The benefits extend well beyond the students. Danielle says Paradise Resort has seen strong recruitment outcomes through the program, particularly within its kitchen and food and beverage teams.

“We have been able to onboard passionate and motivated students who are now completing their qualifications with Paradise Resort,” she said.

One of the most rewarding outcomes has been watching students’ perceptions of the industry evolve.

“From initial curiosity to genuine enthusiasm for careers in tourism and hospitality,” Danielle said. “That’s been incredible to see.”

Schools are seeing the value too. Keebra Park State High School Industry Liaison Officer Mel Short said initiatives like GISP help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry expectations.

“It provides valuable practical, hands-on experience,” she said. “It helps bridge the gap between theory and real-world experience, ensuring students are prepared for future opportunities.”

As Queensland’s tourism industry continues to grow, programs like GISP are creating meaningful connections between operators, schools and future talent. For businesses looking to strengthen their workforce pipeline, engage with their local community and help inspire the next generation, the opportunity to get involved has never been greater.

The Gateway to Industry Schools Program is proudly supported and funded by the Queensland Government.
