Noosa to host QTIC World Environment Day Event celebrating a regenerative tourism future

30 April 2026

One of Queensland’s most naturally iconic destinations will take centre stage this World Environment Day, as the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) brings its premier annual event to Noosa on 9 June. Delivered in partnership with Queensland Government, Noosa Council, Tourism Noosa and the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, the event will shine a spotlight on the critical role of environmental stewardship in shaping the future of tourism.

Set against the backdrop of a region renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and deep commitment to conservation, this year’s event theme, From Commitment to Practice – moving towards a regenerative future, reflects a growing shift across the tourism industry. World Environment Day provides a timely opportunity for tourism operators, sustainability leaders and regional changemakers to come together, share ideas and turn ambition into meaningful action.

The choice of Noosa as host destination is no coincidence. Long celebrated as a premier holiday destination, the region is equally recognised for its leadership in protecting the natural assets that underpin its appeal. Home to Queensland’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a World Surfing Reserve, the first LGA in Australia to achieve EarthCheck certification and one of only two everglade systems in the world, Noosa represents a unique balance of environmental significance, strong community values and exceptional visitor experience. With almost half of its land dedicated to conservation, the region is now leading the transition beyond sustainable tourism toward a more regenerative approach as outlined in its recently released Destination Management Plan.

QTIC CEO Natassia Wheeler said Noosa was a natural fit for this year’s event.

“Noosa is one of Queensland’s most sought-after destinations, not just for its beauty, but for its genuine commitment to protecting what makes it so special,” Ms Wheeler said. “It’s fitting to host our World Environment Day event here, where environmental stewardship is not just a principle but a lived experience and a powerful drawcard for visitors from around the world.”

Noosa Council Mayor Frank Wilkie said the region was proud to partner with QTIC to deliver the event.

“We’re delighted to welcome industry leaders to Noosa for World Environment Day and to showcase the values that define our region” Mr Wilkie said. “Our community has worked hard to protect our natural environment while supporting a thriving visitor economy, and this event is an opportunity to share that journey and inspire others to take meaningful action.”

Tourism Noosa CEO Sharon Raguse said Noosa’s tourism industry has long championed sustainability and the protection of the areas natural assets, recognising they are fundamental to the region’s identity and long-term success.

“Our industry understands that the health of our environment underpins everything we do, and it’s encouraging to see this commitment continue to evolve toward a more regenerative approach,” Ms Raguse said. “Hosting QTIC’s World Environment Day event in Noosa provides an opportunity to showcase how industry, community and government can work together to not only protect what we have, but actively contribute to restoring and enhancing our natural environment for future generations.”

As the tourism industry continues to evolve, initiatives like QTIC’s World Environment Day event highlight the importance of collaboration in driving positive change. In a destination where nature and tourism are deeply interconnected, Noosa provides the ideal setting to explore what a truly regenerative future could look like for Queensland.
